That's ridiculous. Of course there's a holiday in August: August Bank Holiday. Oh, wait, you weren't being US centric, were you?

Yeah, the Italians make a big deal about the Feast of the Assumption.

The Italians shut the country on the Feast of the Assumption. Inconvenient for tourists...

I guess there are not too many Rhode Island readers. We are the only state that still celebrates VJ day (yes, Victory over Japan) the second Monday in August, although the official name is now Victory Day. Having hosted Japanese visitors on VJ day a few years back, I collected another data point confirming the inherent politeness of the Japanese.

sister's day is in august and so is Switzerlands National Day and Singapores National Day

..I don’t see this blending as a bad thing. As our cultures become more common, it is easier to communicate across lines of hatred and mistrust.
