How's this for original?: "...the fiscal equivalent of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." Great writing.

How's this for clear thinking?:"...America’s gluttonous appetite for imports has been one of the mainstays of the global economy,..."

American-made electronics, kitchenware, appliances, clothes, shoes, sheets, tools, toys, hardware, plastic products, sporting goods?

Well, they just don't sate my gluttonous appetites -- mainly because I don't know where to find them.

"Many economists are urging the government to put the books in order now..."

What economist isn't?

Okay, they do notice something may be wrong with the president's logic. A step in the right direction, I admit, but hardly a great leap forward.

Too little, too late. I stopped my subscription a few years ago and have no regrets.

To Dubya, re: "responsibility". "You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

It's that quacking sound. The Economist is setting up for a Republican saviour.

"Military spending is currently supposed to fall off sharply after 2007, the last year in which extra spending for Iraq and Afghanistan is budgeted. This seems hugely optimistic, considering the problems still faced in both countries."

The Economist still hasn't figured this part out. The administration entered Iraq without a plan more complete than "depose Saddam". When it becomes clear that continued large expenditures in Iraq are going to be a losing political issue, the administration will just as cheerfully declare victory and pull the troops out. I say, the administration has already figured that out and will have the troops out by the end of 2007, in preparation for the '08 elections, regardless of the situation on the ground in Iraq.

Who wrote this article?

The Economist has never be a thought leader but has been an average follower or some times a good reporter.

So no surprise they finally got to the truth on Bush adminin- "incompetent, inept, mendacious, and malevolent".
