Adam Smith Hosts "What Not to Wear"
Hoisted from Comments: Jim Leitzel quotes Adam Smith:
Grasping Reality with Both Hands: Economist Brad DeLong's Fair, Balanced, and Reality-Based Semi-Daily Journal: The most perfect modesty and plainness, joined to as much negligence as is consistent with the respect due to the company, ought to be the chief characteristics of the behaviour of a private man. If ever he hopes to distinguish himself, it must be by more important virtues...

Of course Adam Smith never married - so no matter how distinguished his virtues were a flashier wardrobe may have done wonders for his social life.

Brad, what you should do (in your copious free time) is to send that originator of the comment on professorial dressage a note to the effect that only unsuccessful professors worry about what they wear. The successful ones have no time to worry, and are too successful to need to worry.
