Democrats Pick Up Ex-Speaker Hastert's Illinois Congressional Seat
David Kurtz:
Talking Points Memo | Dems Take Old Hastert Seat: The AP has called the race in the Illinois 14th for Democrat Bill Foster.... a 52-48 lead over big-spending GOP candidate Jim Oberweis. Think Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) is having fun yet as chairman of the NRCC?... In some ways it's the coda to the 2006 elections. But on the other hand, you've got a Democrat winning in a special election in a Republican district against a well-funded opponent untainted by scandal. So last hurrah of 2006 -- or prelude to 2008?
People want solutions to their problems. That's why they elected someone to government office.
All Oberweis and the NRCC did was run a negative campaign against "free spending liberals". It just won't work any longer.
This isn't your Ronald Reagan or Newt Gingrich America!

Oberweis's campaign was about Bill Foster not vowing to extend the Bush tax cuts and not being anti-imagrant enough. This is not about the past but about the future. People have had enough of Bush and his sicophants like Jim Oberweis. Every voting househild in the district got a robo call from Laura Bush in the last week. This is about the future not the past.

The House "Physics Caucus" picks up a third member. Foster joins Rush Holt (D-NJ, and formerly of the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab) and Vern Ehlers (R-MI, and UC Berkeley Physics Ph.D.).
