If he doesn't win in November, it doesn't matter how much you, I, and the Europeans like him. Bush's Pyhrric victory? Is that the one where he has basically kicked our butt's for eight years?

[No. I said 1988]

"... that's a level of metaness reached only by people who don't dare make any real arguments."

Some of us are braver. I've decided I'm going to campaign against Obama because some pundits are now saying there might be some polls indicating that many swing voters are expressing the belief that many other voters are wondering whether Obama's really electable. And I'm willing to fight hard. Moreover, I'm willing to fight on the basis of my principles rather than merely to maintain my alpha dog position at the apex of the political metaness hierarchy. (Which, unfortunately, is now at such a dizzying altitude that I no longer dare look down to see where I might have dropped my principles during the long ascent. So I think I'll just close my eyes and swing a heavy chain around myself in a wide circular arc, very rapidly, until November.)

1988? So you did say 1988.

My mistake, and jeez, that feels like 20 years ago.

There is also the coattails argument.

Schumer is claiming that we could get 60 votes in the Senate. It would probably be a good thing for Obama not just to win, but to win with the coattails to make a 60 vote Senate achievable.
