John McCain: Dishonest and Dishonorable
Sam Graham-Felsen writes:
On a conference call earlier today, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis boasted that John McCain "blew up" the initial financial rescue package in order to keep funds from ACORN. However, McCain and his campaign had previously denied killing the bill, boasted that he brought Republicans to the table to support it and even claimed credit for its passage before it failed.
NOW: MCCAIN BLEW UP THE BAILOUT PACKAGE: Rick Davis: McCain Blew Up The Bailout Package. "…in the middle of the greatest disaster in our financial system that we'd had in our lifetime that the Democrats in the United States Senate would actually link payments to ACORN in the bailout package that they promoted prior to Sen. McCain coming to town and actually blowing that package up. So we can actually say that in addition to saving taxpayers millions of dollars, and we're very happy that no more taxpayer dollars were added to the pile of money going to ACORN. Uh, by their own admission because by the democrats own admission because John McCain came to town and blew that package up. Thank goodness." [McCain Conference Call, 10/10/08]
THEN: MCCAIN CAME BACK TO BRING THE REPUBLICANS BACK TO THE TABLE TO PASS A BILL HE SUPPORTED: LEHRER: "Are you going to vote for the plan, Senator McCain?" MCCAIN: "I -- I hope so. And I..." LEHRER: "As a United States senator..." MCCAIN: "Sure." LEHRER: ".. you're going to vote for the plan?" MCCAIN: "Sure. But -- but let me -- let me point out, I also warned about Fannie Mae (NYSE:FNM) and Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE) and warned about corporate greed and excess, and CEO pay, and all that. A lot of us saw this train wreck coming."

Some of the biggest mortgage servicers are hiring ACORN to conduct door-to-door collections. They're paying ACORN to knock on doors, try to work out payment plans to get current and, if the borrower's financial situation is too dire for that, to discuss loan workouts and cash-for-keys.
Mortgage servicers aren't paying ACORN as part of a shakedown. They're doing it because they know that ACORN has credibility.
The Republican jihad against ACORN probably enhances ACORN's credibility.
