Why We Campaign...
Bobby May is part of the John McCain-Sarah Paliin Virginia Leadership Team, and Treasurer of the Buchanan County (VA) Republican Party:

Abraham Lincoln, William Seward, Thaddeus Stevens, and Ulysses Simpson Grant are rolling over in their graves as I write.
John McCain: Despicable, dishonest, dishonorable.

A natural "Diaster"?
So is he saying that every time an animal cell divides, Obama will raise taxes?

There's a simple rule here: if John McCain does not reject, renounce and repudiate this piece and its author, he is objectively endorsing it.
Does John McCain endorse racist filth? Is this the price of power?
Posted by: tWB | October 05, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Correction: You mean "John SYDNEY McCain: Despicable, dishonest, dishonorable"
He is clearly a secret Australian!

I hate to endorse any of the assertions in this piece, but anybody that's ever sung "Lift Every Voice and Sing" knows that it's a lot better than the Star-Spangled Banner.

After the steam stops coming out of my ears, I might have to drop this cat a line.

Is anyone else becoming increasing alarmed with the ugliness, ignorance, lies, and hidden racism? Dear God, what has become of this country when the electorate becomes immune to lies, dishonesty, meanness and doesn't care if their leaders are knowledgeable and profess rigorous thinking?

Am I reading it right?
"Condemnation of homosexuality from the pulpit" ??? is this guy a logcabin republican?
I think this is one of those "that doesn't really mean what you think it does" moments.

Source?

Tomas,
The piece says that "condemnation of homosexuality from the pulpit" would be a "felony" under Obama.
SvN -- Source is LA Times.
Posted by: tWB | October 05, 2008 at 12:09 PM
For the second time, Brad -- the Obama campaign adopts your slogan!
McCain is DISHONEST AND DISHONORABLE!!
Obama spokesman Bill Burton released a statement Saturday rejecting the reports on McCain's new strategy as "dishonest, dishonorable character attacks." He signaled Obama will still try to keep the economy front-and-center going forward.
Posted by: Thads | October 05, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Surely the LA Times wouldn't have *published* that??? (Reported it???) What an amazing piece of rubbish. I agree with tWB--if John McCaind doesn't denounce that, then he is clearly accepting it. And if he doesn't denounce it, then ram it down his throat.

I stopped paying attention to this piece as soon as I saw the line:
"I think I've did a pretty good job..."
Obviously, a jackass.

local VA paper called "The Voice".

That story links to a photo of the same clipping as the one above, but notice that some bits that are missing above show up in this one. And some of these bits are even more absurd and offensive.

As a Canadian, I can't vote in your election. But I've got all my fingers and toes crossed for Obama.

This clown means "condonement". Lucky for him the Constitution forbids literacy tests for voting.

Buchanan County is deep in southwest Virginia's coal country. It is a predominantly Democratic county and there's a good chance Obama will win it this time too. Republicans in the area are either coal company executives or repugnant racists.
Note that Buchanan County right around where George Allen called that guy a macaca. The GOP in that area of Virginia is a cesspool of bigotry and corruption.

Here more from the Buchanan County GOP -- this is from a comment on their website by Jerry M Lester, Buchanan County Republican Party Chairman:
"...We should be afraid, very afraid because our apathy is leading us to perdition. It is time for all Christian Americans to raise the battle cry and take our nation back. Maybe McCain on his own cannot defeat Obama but our God can and He will if we take to our knees in prayer and raise a mighty cry to the heavens to “Save us O Lord”. We have the power to change the course of this election and to keep a man as suspect as Barak Obama from leading our country to who knows where with his message of “change” - a change which I fear will be away from our Christian ideals and away from Christ and further away one nation under God to one nation under Allah. We are great at passing stories and pictures around the internet but where are our prayers and prayer warriors praying to stop this tide of Barak Obama? God parted the Red Sea , Jesus raised himself from the dead and we can bring our country back to its Christian roots and stop the move to the rise of Muslims in our country. "

I understand that it's scary and threatening when a black man is smarter than you and, worse, the world actually knows it. You can complain about being a poor white man and spout the racist ramblings of a fearful worm, or you can get up and do something productive for yourself and your country. Like leave.

"I think I've did a pretty good job..."???
That's not correct English, not even for Virginia standards. That's almost as bad as saying, "I think I've done did a pretty good job..."
Pure eloquence. A truly great mind at work here!

I would hesitate connecting this jerk with Virginia or any other state. It's an easy and unnecessary slam and plays right in to the "liberal elite" moniker. Plus, it's disingenuous...every state has residents who think along these lines.
As for poor his poor spelling or grammar...this part of Virginia is Appalachia, a region which is chronically neglected by the Feds, and that includes education. The conditions encountered by the WPA writers are not much different than those encountered by Bobby Kennedy during his run, or even today. Add folkways to all this mix.
I'm not apologizing for this guy's vile opinions. I'm merely suggesting some of the above attacks are too facile and easy, which to me often means shallow and ultimately self-defeating.
Posted by: lulms | October 06, 2008 at 12:15 AM
Well, see...I screwed up in the third line of the above post, too. Please don't come down on me.

Incredibly racist. And the Republican Party of Buchanan County blog is even worse.
Quote: George Bush is being buffeted because he has fought a holy war against the evils that attack us…and we should not be surprised because a prophet is not honored in his own country.

Bobby May, in his recent article/editorial regarding Barack Obama, does an excellent job reinforcing the stereotypes that many people around the US hold about Appalachia (ignorant, racist, etc.).
http://www.latimes.com/media/acrobat/2008-10/42750415.pdf
I am certain that his ignorance does not reflect all the people in the Appalachian region (one of the most beautiful parts of the US, I might add). I hope his neighbors in Virginia and Tennessee will inform him that they prefer not to be represented by Mr. May's words, which, as noted, perpetuate a backwards image that probably doesn't apply to them.
However, since Mr. May is the McCain campaign chairperson in Buchanan County, Virginia, I must assume that his editorial DOES reflect the ideals of the McCain campaign. Mr. May has done a great service by sharing the views of John McCain and Sarah Palin with the rest of us.
I'm a "Joe Six-pack" white guy from Texas, by the way. And I must say, even here in Bush country, we have advanced at least 100 years beyond Mr. May's antiquated thinking. Muchas gracias, Mr. May, for reminding us how far most of the country, aside from you, has progressed since the Civil War.

The Buchanan County GOP tried to hide their Web site but for some reason this page is still up - http://bucgop.com/blog13/letters-and-comments/
George Bush's "holy war", Michelle Obama is "anti-white", and Barack is part of a "tide of the anti-Christ actions"...
It's truly scary.
Take a screenshot before they find a way to take this page down too.
Posted by: DVOhio | October 06, 2008 at 07:40 PM
The editorial appears to be inciting violence against Mr. Obama. To boot, Ms. Palin is saying he is "paling around with Terrorists", and at Mr. McCain's rally, supporters are shouting "Terrorist" - a Terrorist is a murderer and it could provoke violence and undermine our democracy.

This guy is clearly an embarassment to his county, state, party, country, and species. Still, be careful not to learn too over-learn the lessons from this. Buchanan County (VA) is in the Apalachian southwest of the state, and has a population of 26,000. This is not an important person in the state party.

As a fellow virginian and daughter of a black man who served his country honorably in WWII, Korea and Vietnam but was NOT allowed to ride in the front of the bus or eat in the resaurant of his choice when he returned to the USA in the the 1960's I AM OUTRAGED by Mr. May's comments. SHAME ON YOU for dishonoring the thousands of BLACK servicemen ( people who you obviously harbor an extreme hatred for) for sacrificing their lives so you could have the freedom to write such FILTH! Obviously, he has never left the state of VIRGINIA and has done NOTHING with his LIFE but feels compelled to critisize that which he does not understand and fears. He sounds just like his nominee for president! Shame on Jon Mccain for not checking out those people that he endorses to work on his campaign. I don't care what McCain says... it sounds like his republican workers have let his true feelings out of the bag...
