Sanders / Krugman 2012 May 02, 2012 at 08:22 PM: By the standard of contemporary politics, you are well on the left. But, there are several commenters here who are consistently on your left. Where you argue that once we get the magneto going all will be well with the economy, they argue (and I know I'm conflating individual voices) that due to entrenched crony capitalism, politically connected rentiers, looming resource exhaustion, deliberate deindustrialization of the rustbelt, globalization's race to the bottom, global warming, and the utter spineless of the Democratic Party and Barack Obama, we are well and truly fucked, beyond all power of a Keynesian stimulus to solve. What say you?
J. Bradford DeLong May 03, 2012 at 8:15 AM: We have big long-run problems that we may or may not know how to solve and may or may not be able to solve, and we have a big short-run problem that we know how to solve. We should turn our energies to solve the short-run problem because (a) it is urgent, (b) it is important, and (c) we know how to solve it. Afterwards, we will see. At the moment, worrying about our long-run problems in a way that distracts energy from fixing the short run problem is a luxury we cannot afford. So say we all.
